Sworn Translation in Turkey
A sworn translation is only useful if the office that receives it accepts it. Most problems come from information that was missing at the start, not from the translation itself. A few minutes of preparation saves most of the back-and-forth.
Where a sworn translation is used
Sworn translations are used with Turkish authorities, courts and consulates, and with foreign offices that ask for an official translation of a Turkish document. If you are not sure whether your document needs a sworn translation, a notarized one, or both, read Sworn vs. Notarized Translation in Turkey first.
What to send us
- Every page of the document, including the back of a page if anything is written, stamped or signed on it.
- Clear images. Everything must be readable, including stamps, seals and handwriting. A blurred or cropped image slows everything down.
- Your passport details, so we can match the spelling of names.
What to tell us
- The language you need it in. Say it clearly, and say which direction: for example, Turkish into English, or German into Turkish.
- Which office will receive it. The country and the type of office matter, because they decide whether notarization, an apostille or legalization is needed afterwards.
- Your deadline. Tell us when you need it so we can plan around it.
Names and spellings
A translation reproduces the names exactly as they appear on the document. If a name on the document is spelled differently from your passport, the mismatch will follow the document wherever it goes, and the receiving office may reject it. Tell us about any difference before the translation starts, and we will advise on how to handle it.
What comes after the translation
| Direction | Order |
|---|---|
| Turkish document for use abroad | Sworn translation, notarization of the translation, then the apostille (or legalization) |
| Foreign document for use in Turkey | Apostille or legalization in the country that issued it, then sworn translation into Turkish and notarization in Turkey |
A translation does not replace an apostille or legalization. Whether you need one depends on the destination. See Apostille or Consular Legalization? and Foreign Documents for Use in Turkey for the details.
Mistakes that cost time
- Sending only the front page. Back pages, stamps and annotations are part of the document and need translating too.
- Unreadable images. Doubtful words, stamps or handwriting can cause delay and, in the worst case, errors.
- Not saying which office it is for. Without it, we can't tell you which steps come next.
- Mismatched names. Differences between the document and the passport are a frequent reason for rejection.
- Assuming the translation is enough. It may also need notarization and an apostille or legalization.
